Word Munchers is an educational puzzle game developed by MECC in 1985 for DOS. You control a green Muncher on a grid, tasked with eating words that match a specific phonetic rule—such as a particular vowel sound—while avoiding the roaming Troggles that want to eat you.

How to play

Move the Muncher around the grid using the arrow keys and press Spacebar to eat a word. If you munch a word that matches the target rule at the top of the screen, you score points; munching an incorrect word or getting caught by a Troggle costs you a life. Clear the board of all correct words to advance to the next level.

Tips

Prioritize clearing words near the edges or corners first, as these areas are easier to get trapped in when Troggles appear.
Watch out for different types of Troggles: some move randomly, while others actively hunt you or change the words on the board.
If you are unsure about a word, wait and clear the ones you know first—munching a wrong word is just as deadly as touching a Troggle.
