Lode Runner 3-D is a 1999 action-puzzle platformer for the Nintendo 64, developed by Big Bang Software. It reimagines the classic gold-collecting formula in three dimensions across five themed worlds. Instead of jumping, you navigate grid-based levels by climbing ladders, swinging on bars, and strategically digging holes to trap pursuing Mad Monks while gathering every piece of gold to open the exit.
How to play
Your goal is to collect all the gold in each level to reveal the exit. You cannot jump; instead, you rely on movement and your blaster, which removes blocks from the floor. Use the analog stick or D-pad to move, and the A or B buttons to dig to your left or right. Trapped monks will eventually climb out, but if a hole fills in while they are trapped, they are eliminated and will respawn elsewhere.
Tips
- The blaster only removes standard floor blocks. You cannot dig through solid stone, so plan your escape routes carefully.
- When you dig a hole, it remains open for a few seconds before filling back in. You can safely run over a trapped monk’s head to cross gaps.
- Monks can pick up and carry gold pieces. If you trap a monk carrying gold, they will drop it, allowing you to collect it.
